Earlier this evening, someone small and precious came in from outside and made a beeline for the bathroom. Loud grunting commenced. The DaddyMan and I looked at each other and smiled. Then I asked, "Sheesh, are you givin' birth in there?"

And from behind the door, a small voice said, "Yeah, a honkin' big one!"

Didja know...

That if you're biting a scarf and your big sister pulls on it to take it away from you and you have a slightly loose tooth, that in a matter of seconds you will wind up looking like this?

Growing up

Miss A will be getting braces in a few months. In the meantime, they've put a funky looking appliance in the roof of her mouth which is designed to push her molars back a bit to give her permanent teeth a bit more room. Since it's a big piece of plastic that doesn't quite touch the roof of her mouth, she's really having some issues with it.

Basically, she talks funny. Really funny. And the faster she talks the more she struggles.

Yesterday I was at a function with a bunch of moms. One came up to me and mentioned that she'd just been having a lovely conversation with A. I had to ask, "So did you laugh at her for the way she talks?

Her response, without missing a beat, "Only in my head."

(I knew that she wouldn't truly laugh at my child, but I guessed that she would find it amusing. I was right. ;) )

Money Musings

I quit my job almost 9 years ago. A was 2.5 years old and I'd nannied for the same family for 7 years. It was a tough decision. Tougher still because my salary had seen us thru some lean times--owning and then losing our company.

Thankfully, I'd been raised to be frugal. I considered doing some sort of home business to help pay the bills but I quickly realized that I'm better at saving money than truly making money. I buy things on sale, I shop garage sales and if I can't find what I want for the price I want to pay, I just go with out or improvise. I truly believe God has given us some huge blessings because our our tightwadness.

Today was another example of saving money vs. earning more money. Kmart is having double coupon days. They'll double any coupon up to $2. Sweet. I compared my stack of coupons to their ad and made a list. After my trip, I'd bought $22.50 worth for only $7.20. That's about a 70% discount. I was thrilled.

Then I went to do laundry. My dryer door wouldn't shut. I could see the problem was with the latch, so I tried to tear it apart. When that didn't work, I got online and Googled. I discovered a)this is a frequent problem with my brand of dryer and b)it's an easy fix. I was just preparing to get out my screwdriver when the DaddyMan showed up and he took over. (He still gets a little twitchy when I start tearing apart the appliances or using power tools.)

Twenty minutes later, the door was fixed. That saved us at least $80. I ordered a replacement part online for the next time it breaks and I know that the $4.50 part would've probably cost me about two or three times that if a repair guy had come to fix the dryer. Sweet.

All told, today I saved my family at least $100. That'll cover our groceries for the week. To quote Miss G, "Yay me!"

In case you were wondering

Did you know that one cubic foot of styrofoam packing peanuts can create enough small pieces to cover 1200 square feet of space?

Did you know that three children under age 4 can perform that experiment in about 10 minutes?

Did you know that a regular vacuum bag can only vacuum up about 10 square feet of packing peanuts before it's full?

Did you know that sweeping packing peanuts is very hard due to static electricity?

Did you know if a man comes home, sees the packing peanut mess and says, "Did you know they were doing this?" that one can think of about 961 ways to cause him bodily harm in the time it takes to clean up the mess?

Did you know that after cleaning up a mess of this magnitude it would be in said man's best interest to prepare this woman a fruity drink with an umbrella instead of sneaking out to walk the dog?

Where's that $#%$ fairy godmother when you really need her?

So, Easter was on Sunday and today's Thursday. I've been in a funk all week. I've done school each day, the house is presentable but I just can't figure out what project to take on next. We had a couple gray dreary days and I just feel blah.

But this morning I perused the local paper online and my mood has improved. There are garage sales! WhooHOO! I swear, my heart leapt with joy at the possible treasures to be found! And now, I must run, shower and prepare to leave the house in the 40 degree morning to see what I can find!

Hallelujah! Spring is HERE!

Happy Easter!

Aaah, Easter! The greatest holiday for Christians! What a glorious day! He IS risen!
This year I was ready to relax and celebrate this day because.... my sewing was done ahead of time! Hooray!

I started with M's a couple weeks ago--I knew the smocking would take time. Since I was winging the pattern, I had to interrupt her nap a couple times on Friday to remeasure her and be sure that the idea in my head would work.
It fit okay, but I hated the first draft of the back. So, I whacked it off and tried again. I love the revision and so does she. For the summer this will be perfect. For today, she needed a shirt underneath.
G's dress is my first attempt at counterchange smocking. It took a couple tries but then I figured it out. To quote G, "Yay me!" The back of hers looks like M's and she loves it. That's huge for this child--if she doesn't like it, she won't wear it. :P

By the time I got to sewing A's outfit (Saturday morning around 10 am), I was tired of drafting dress patterns. So, I winged a skirt. I decided to pleat it, make buttonholes to run a belt thru and call it done. She loves it.

All three of my cherubs before church this morning. I got us all ready, hair curled and everything AND to church on time. That, my friends, is nothing short of a miracle either. :)

I may have had that comin' to me.

I'm on the phone with a friend, who shall remain nameless. In the background of our conversation, I can hear her children talking. Her oldest child was nagging a sibling for messing up the floor she had JUST swept.

I laughed, "That child is SO you."

She says, "Hey, don't make fun. I'm pretty proud of my little protege!"

I said, "Right, but someday she's going to look in the mirror and see YOU and none of us enjoy seeing our mothers in the mirror!"

We converse a bit more and I can hear her child telling a story from her school day.

I say, "You know people tell me my girls talk fast but I don't always realize that until I listen to other children talk."

She responds, "Well, they do hang out with you all day. See how you are ruining them slowly?"

Touche. (Which is not what I said at the time, but this is a G-rated blog ya know....)

G is insanely flexible. Hyperflexible is what her pediatrician in Wisconsin called it and then asked if she was a late walker. Why yes, I believe 17 months IS late. Apparently when your joints are this loose, it makes learning to walk a bit harder.

You can bend her thumb down so it touches her forearm. Easily. Creepily easily. I can do it, but it kinda hurts. It doesn't hurt G.

She recently figured out how to do this trick. Again, she does it easily.

So, I asked her if she can make her nose touch the carpet. Why yes...she can.

Can you?
